With the season opener just twenty-four days away, the 2016 Stetson University football team hit the ground running on Tuesday evening, holding its first practice for the upcoming campaign.
The team took to the gridiron under ideal conditions, with a light breeze and the temperature in the low 80's. Each roster member started preparing for the rigors of the upcoming season by practicing with groups of players from their respective positions. The offense and defense then came together at the latter portion of the practice for more drills.
The majority of the roster, which includes several fifth year seniors, came into the preseason in excellent condition, which has fifth year head coach, Roger Hughes feeling optimistic about what can be in 2016.
“I'm always optimistic because I have great belief in these guys, but by the same stand point, it's the first time we have had this much experience returning,” said Hughes. “Our sport is one where you pay it forward, you do your payments ahead of time before you reap the rewards. Our guys sense that, and I think it's a sign of maturity and a sign of commitment and work ethic.”
The 2016 Stetson football team will open with three consecutive home games in September at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. Online ticket sales for new season tickets and mini plans are available as are single-game tickets.
