Hatters Settle for Opening Night Draw

DeLAND—Stetson dominated the final 65 minutes of play but a sluggish first half resulted in a 1-1 draw with FIU in the season-opener for both teams, Friday at the Athletic Training Center.

Stetson out-shot the Panthers, 16-4, after halftime, and 19-9 for the game. Down 1-0 at intermission the Hatters knotted the match when junior Sarah Collins scored on a breakaway in the 59th minute.

The Hatters kept up the pressure the rest of the way but FIU's defense kept Stetson out of the scoring column. Panthers' goalkeeper Sophia Trujillo made eight saves. She also got some help when her teammates stopped two shots midway through the second half when Stetson took control of the match.

FIU grabbed a 1-0 lead when Michaela Rouse scored off a free kick by Talia McMurtrie in the 41st minute. The Panthers out-shot Stetson, 5-3, in the first 45 minutes.

Stetson's goalkeeper combo of Emily Plotz and Ashlee Oleinikow combined to make four saves.

The Hatters return to the pitch when they host Miami, 1 p.m., Sunday at the ATC.
