Hatters Draw with UMass-Lowell, 2-2

DeLAND--Sarah Collins and Hailey Williams each scored goals but Stetson couldn't take advantage of a significant advantage in shot attempts as the Hatters settled for a 2-2 draw with UMass-Lowell, Friday at the Athletic Training Center.

Stetson (0-1-2) out-shot the River Hawks (0-1-2) by a 24-10 margin. The Hatters had nine shots on goal, but UML keeper Lauren Huff made seven saves.

The Hatters set the tone early, dominating the first 18 minutes of play as they launched eight shots to just one for the River Hawks

Collins gave the Hatters a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when she broke free on the right side of the box and scored from 12 yards out. But the Hatters failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, and the 1-0 lead didn't last long.

Lowell's Rachel Morrier tied the game on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 35th minute.

The game remained tied until the River Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute on a goal by Katelyn Vieira.

Williams injected life into the Hatters when she converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute to make it a 2-2 game. Stetson followed Williams' goal with nine shots and four corner kicks in the final 29 minutes but couldn't penetrate the Lowell goal.

The Hatters had just one significant scoring opportunity in overtime, that coming in the first extra period. Riana Meztger had an opening from the left side but her shot from 15 yards went wide to the right.

The Hatters host St. Leo, 7 p.m., Sunday.
