BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Rhode Island's Nikklas Middrup scored the game's only goal, leading the Rams to a 1-0 win over Stetson in the opening match of the UAB Soccer for a Classic at BBVA Compass Field.
After a scoreless first half, Middrup gave the Rams the lead when he took a cross from Peder Kristianssen in the box and poked a shot past the reach of Stetson keeper Paul Ladwig in the 63rd minute.
As the score indicates, the Hatters (2-2-1) and Rams (3-1-1) played an even match. URI edged the Hatters in shots, 10-9. Ladwig made three saves while Rhode Island keeper Nils Leifhelm made four.
Freshman Gabriel Diniz led the Hatters with five shots, including two on-goal.
Stetson returns to action when the Hatters face Tulsa, 12:30 p.m., Sunday.
