CHARLESTON, S.C.—College of Charleston's Jessica Schifer broke a scoreless tie in the 85th minute to lead the Cougars to a 1-0 win over visiting Stetson, Friday at Patriot's Point.
The Cougars (4-3-0) dominated play on the offensive end, out-shooting the Hatters (1-4-2) by a 24-4 margin.
Schifer scored when a CofC free kick by Laura Ortega glanced off a Stetson defender and straight to Schifer, who found the back of the net for the lead.
Stetson goalkeeper Kahri Smith made a valiant effort in goal for the Hatters, making 10 saves – one off her career high – as the Cougars unleashed 11 shots on goal.
Stetson, on the other hand, managed just three shots on goal with both of those coming from the foot of forward Sarah Collins.
Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry was not pleased with his team's efforts on Friday.
“Simply put, after the first five minutes, we were never really in the game as an aggressor,” Khettry said. “We had moments of good possession and shape but we never really created and real goal-scoring chances. College of Charleston was better than us and deserved to win. They out-competed us all over the field and we were fortunate not to be down at halftime and keep the game as close as we did, score-wise.
“It was a disappointing evening and, while I think we can be better, it's going to take some real effort and commitment by every player and coach to get us moving forward. I feel like we took a step back today, especially for how well we competed last weekend against a very good UCF team. That game showed me what we can be when we are committed to each other and being disciplined. We have it in us to be better, but we are going to have to regroup, look in the mirror and confront the things we aren't doing well individually and collectively and make a real commitment to change, otherwise this is going to be the norm.”
The Hatters next return to action when they host Campbell, 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 16 at the ATC.
