Opportunistic Hatters Secure ASUN Victory

DeLAND—David Caulfield's goal in the 72nd minute snapped a heated tie and guided Stetson to a crucial 2-1 victory over USC Upstate in Atlantic Sun Conference play, Saturday at the Athletic Training Center.

Caulfield's goal – his first of the season – gave the Hatters (3-4-2) their first ASUN victory of the season, and their first conference win since Oct. 24, 2014.

Upstate (2-5-0, 0-1-0) dominated play for much of the contest, at one point owning a 19-8 advantage in shots. But the Stetson defense, led by keeper Paul Ladwig, kept the Spartans off the scoreboard in the second half and for most of the game.

"We know that every game we play is going to be difficult," interim head coach Jared Vock said. "We know it's going to be a fight. In these situations you have to remain calm and do your job. And we did that today."

The Hatters opened the scoring when Luke Ferreira took advantage of a misplay by an Upstate defender for an easy goal in the ninth minute. An Upstate defender to head the ball back to keeper Santiago Restrepo but miscalculated the pass, and the ball went right to Ferreira in front of an empty goal for an easy score.

Stetson's lead was short-lived. The Spartans evened the match 54 seconds later when Morten Timm blasted a shot into the upper 90 thanks to a nifty cross from Rinaldi Alphonse in the 10th minute.

The contest remained tied over the next 62 minutes, during which time Upstate out-shot the Hatters 15-7. Ladwig made seven saves during the Spartans' flurry, setting up the Hatters for a dramatic victory.

That victory came on a set-piece goal, something Vock has been preaching to his players all season. Eyal Cohen's free kick from the left side just below the box was on target for a diving Caulfield, who headed the ball just inside the left post for the game winner.

Ladwig tied a career-high with 11 saves overall as the Spartans unleashed 24 total shots. Restrepo stopped three shots while facing 15 overall.

In many respects, Ladwig's performance was another day at the office. Saturday marked the second time this season the senior made 10 or more saves. He currently leads the ASUN with 54 saves, 26 more than the next closest keeper.

"He is so consistent," Vock said. "That's Paul. Anything but that kind of effort and we'd wonder if something was wrong."

The Hatters return to action when they visit Florida Atlantic, 5 p.m., Tuesday, in Boca Raton, Fla.
