Hatters Rally for First ASUN Victory

DeLAND—Three different players scored goals and Sarah Collins tied a school record with three assists as Stetson rallied for a 3-2 win over Atlantic Sun Conference foe NJIT, Friday at the Athletic Training Center.

Lindsey Parent, Eduarda Pavao and Briana Camargo each scored goals for the Hatters (4-4-2, 1-0-0) as they opened ASUN play with a win. But the Hatters needed to rally after coming out a little flat in the first half.

Playing its first game in 12 days, Stetson dominated play during most of the first half but was on the short end of a 1-0 score at halftime. The Hatters took 11 shots in the first 45 minutes – including a missed penalty kick by Collins – but NJIT (5-5-2, 1-1-0) grabbed the initial lead when Melanie Zrno took advantage of a misplay by the Stetson defense in front of the goal in the 44th minute.

The Hatters continued to be the aggressor in the second half and it finally paid off in the 63rd minute as Parent blasted in a shot from 12 yards away to knot the score at 1-1. Her goal was made possible when a Collins shot ricocheted off a defender right to Parent's feet, and she immediately slammed the ball home for a goal.

Just over two minutes later Collins found Pavao sneaking along the weak side of the defense, and Pavao calmly sank her first score of the season for a 2-1 advantage.

Stetson appeared to increase its lead in the 73rd minute off a corner kick but what looked to be a score was disallowed as the linesman ruled it didn't cross the goal line. NJIT quickly countered with a run down the field resulting in a goal by Carly Berdan, knotting the match at 2-2.

Camargo gave the Hatters the final lead of the night in the 84th minute when she hooked up with Collins and twin sister Abbie on a beautiful thru ball from 20 yards away.

The Hatters had several chances in the final minutes to add to the lead but Highlanders' keeper Karen David was up to the task. Overall David faced 25 shots and made 12 saves. Stetson's Emily Plotz made three saves.

Collins is the sixth player in school history with three assists in a game, and the first since Alyssa Welsh in 2010.

The Hatters continue their home conference weekend when they host USC Upstate, 1 p.m., Sunday.
