Hatters Ambushed at Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Stetson's Derick Newton scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds but it wasn't enough to overcome an outstanding effort by Lipscomb as the Bisons secured a 94-68 win in Atlantic Sun Conference play, Thursday at Allen Arena.

Lipscomb (10-9, 2-0) shot 57 percent from the field for the game, and out-rebounded Stetson, 47-28. Rob Marberry led the Bisons with 23 points, and Eli Pepper had a double-double with 12 points and 16 boards.

The Bisons took control of the game early and never relinquished it. After Stetson's Divine Myles hit a jumper to put the Hatters (7-10, 0-2) within 30-22 at 5:31 of the first half, Lipscomb finished the half with a 19-5 run and led 49-27 at the break.

The lead swelled to 30 when Lipscomb's Kenny Cooper converted a layup for a 71-41 lead with 10:06 to go.

Newton was 9 of 15 from the field and 5 of 6 from the line. He was joined in double figures by Myles and Leo Goodman, who scored 18 and 15, respectively.

News & Notes
Newton scored 20 or more points for the 16th time in his career … he fell one rebound shy of his 11th career double-double … Leo Goodman reached double figures for the third straight game … the sophomore is averaging 14.3 points per game in the three outings … Lipscomb dominated the paint, out-scoring the Hatters 58-34.

Quotable
"We told our guys what to expect and we didn't meet the challenge at all. Lipscomb was aggressive all night. Their post guys shoved it down our throats. For whatever reason, we didn't meet their level of play. This is a reality check for our guys. We told them if you don't come ready to play this was going to happen. In this league teams can beat you on any given night." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams
