Late Free Throws Sink Hatters in ASUN Showdown with FGCU

DeLAND—FGCU's Brandon Goodwin sank three free throws with 0.6 seconds to play, sending Stetson to a heartbreaking 89-88 loss in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (7-10, 0-1) led 85-77 after a Luke Doyle 3-pointer with 1:21 left in the game. Using a trapping defense and an opportunistic offense, the Eagles (12-5, 1-0) eventually tied the game on a layup by Goodwin with nine seconds to go. But B.J. Glasford cherry-picked on the play and hit a breakaway layup with just over three seconds to play for an 88-86 lead.

With no timeouts, Goodwin pushed the ball up the court and attempted a 35-foot desperation shot. But Glasford was whistled for a foul as the buzzer sounded. After a replay review, officials determined the foul occurred before the buzzer sounded and Goodwin was awarded three free throws.

After Goodwin made his free throws, Stetson's three-quarter court heave bounced off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

The loss came despite Stetson rallying from a 45-36 deficit at halftime, and limiting FGCU to 44.4 percent shooting in the second half. The Eagles closed the first half with a 6-0 run to momentarily break open a tight game.

Several excellent individual efforts by the Hatters were spoiled in the loss. Divine Myles led all scorers with 21 points, going 9 of 12 from the field, adding seven assists and five rebounds. Derick Newton and Luke Doyle each scored 18 points, and Leo Goodman enjoyed his second straight strong effort with 11 points off the bench.

Goodwin led FGCU with 20 points.

Quotable
"Games like this sometimes are a reality check. You can tell your team how good they are but until you go out there and compete you don't realize that you can do it. We proved we can win the game. I thought we were the better team today." – head coach Corey Williams
