Hatters, FGCU Draw in Battle of ASUN Leaders

The two best men's soccer teams in the ASUN Conference squared off on Saturday in DeLand and after 110 minutes nothing was settled as Stetson and FGCU battled to a 1-1 draw at the Athletic Training Center.

The Hatters (6-5-1 overall, 4-0-1 ASUN) are still atop the ASUN standings, and FGCU (6-4-2, 3-0-1) remains right on their heels.

Each team scored a first-half goal and stout defensive play took over from there. FGCU took an early 1-0 lead when Shak Adams found the net with a goal off a corner kick in the seventh minute. The ball bounced around following the corner effort before Adams' shot made it through.

Stetson tied the match on Deniz Dogan's successful penalty kick in the 42nd minute. The PK opportunity arose after Stetson's Daniel O'Brien was tackled to ground by FGCU keeper Connor Gavigan.

From that point forward, neither team scored though both had plenty of good opportunities. Stetson's David Bergstrom nearly gave the Hatters a 2-1 lead early in the second half with a blast from the right edge of the box, but an FGCU keeper cleared the shot at the line.

Dogan had multiple opportunities in both regulation and overtime, but Gavigan either made the save or Dogan just missed.

The Hatters launched 21 shots, including 10 on-goal. Gavigan made 10 saves to keep FGCU in it. The Eagles took 13 shots, but only three were on-goal. Stetson keeper Joseph Melong made two saves.

Stetson next steps away from conference play when they host FAU, 7 p.m., Tuesday.
