Hatters Draw With Jacksonville

Stetson and Jacksonville played to a scoreless draw in the final ASUN Conference men's soccer game of the year for the Hatters, Friday at Southern Oka Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Hatters (7-5-2 overall, 4-0-2 ASUN) stretched their unbeaten streak to nine straight games but also missed out on an opportunity to clinch at least a share of the ASUN regular-season title. Jacksonville (3-8-1, 1-2-1) kept alive the ASUN Tournament hopes with the draw.

The draw did, however, clinch at least the No.2 seed for Stetson in next month's ASUN Tournament. The Hatters, who will receive a bye into the semifinal round, will host a quarterfinal and semifinal match the first weekend of November.

"I'm really proud of our effort tonight," head coach Kyle Gookins said. "For 90 minutes we passed the ball very well and created some good looks at goal.  Jacksonville played tough and set up to try and stop us from playing our style.  We did almost everything right and were unlucky not to score, but we did not deal with the overtime periods well and Joe made two great saves. We are disappointed not to get three points tonight. However, to go unbeaten in the ASUN is a good benchmark for this program."

Stetson owned an 18-15 advantage in shots against the Dolphins, but couldn't find the back of the net. Joseph Melong registered his fifth shutout of the year in goal, making three saves.

The Hatters close out the 2017 regular season when they visit Goergia Southerm 7 p.m., Tuesday in Statesboro, Ga.
