Hatters Fall 3-1 at Jacksonville

Stetson records 80 digs and 16 blocks

Jacksonville, Fla. -- In a seesaw affair that saw both teams compile long runs, Jacksonville outlasted visiting Stetson 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16) Friday night in an ASUN Conference match at Swisher Gym.

The Hatters (3-18, 2-7 ASUN) had a huge game at the net, collecting a season-high 16 blocks, half of which were solos.  Hao Jin became the fourth Hatter in the rally-scoring era to collect 10 blocks in a match, and her four block solos broke the Stetson rally-scoring era record.

It was also a night of rallies for the Hatters, who mounted comebacks in each of the four sets.

In Set 1, Stetson used a 9-2 run to turn a 20-14 deficit into a 23-22 advantage.  The Dolphins scored four of the next five points, however, to take the first set 26-24.

In the second set, the Hatters were able to successfully complete a huge comeback.  Trailing 19-14, Stetson scored seven straight points to take the lead for good.  That run featured five blocks, one kill and one ace, and the Hatters went on to close out a 25-22 victory to tie the match 1-1.

Again in Set 3, the Hatters fought back from an early 18-7 deficit.  Stetson went on an 11-2 run to pull within two at 20-18.  However, JU tallied the final five points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Dolphins threatened to pull away in the fourth set, jumping out to an early 10-2 lead.  However, the Hatters fought back once again, going on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 12-11.  Stetson could not pull even as JU closed out the match with a 25-16 victory.

Jin, along with Rebecca Ingram and Charlotte Earnhart, each had nine kills to lead the offense.  Earnhart added a career-best 15 digs and five aces to her stat line.

Naina Ivanova posted her 11th double-double of the season with 21 assists and 15 digs.  Freshman Jenna Boland made her collegiate debut, recording 11 assists, four digs and one kill.

Chelcie Spence led the back row with 18 digs, while Anna Bezhan picked up 14 digs as well.  Stetson collected 80 digs as a team.

Julie Varga and Shelby Connors each recorded a pair of block solos as the Hatters came within one block of tying the school rally-scoring era record (17).

Mallory Mattingly had 16 kills to lead the Dolphins (14-8, 8-1 ASUN).

The Hatters will visit UNF at 5 p.m. Saturday.
