Hatters Rally Past NJIT to Stay Undefeated in ASUN

Deniz Dogan's penalty kick goal with just over three minutes to play was the difference as Stetson men's soccer remained undefeated in ASUN Conference play with a 2-1 win over NJIT, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

On a blistering hot day, the Hatters (6-5-0, 4-0-0) were the better team as they out-shot the Highlanders (7-4-2, 2-1-0) by a 17-11 count, while at the same time holding conference leading scorer Mamadou Guirassy to just one shot on goal.

The Hatters actually had to come from behind to defeat the Highlanders. NJIT took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Jack Flanagan headed in a pass from Pablo Jimenez for a 1-0 lead.

NJIT stayed ahead until the Hatters got on the board in the 70th minute. Graduate transfer Justin Broome scored his first Stetson goal on a header off a corner kick from Raphael Northoff.

Stetson continued to apply pressure over the next 15 minutes until Dogan was taken down from behind in the penalty box with 3:18 to play. After NJIT's Hugo Espuela was sent off with a red card, Dogan blasted a PK attempt past NJIT keeper Victor Pujades to give the Hatters a 2-1 lead, and eventually the victory. The goal was Dogan's team-leading fifth of the season.

Sunday's victory sets up what will essentially be a showdown for the ASUN regular-season championship when the Hatters host FGCU, 7 p.m., Saturday, October 14 at the ATC.
