Rally Hatters Down South Alabama in Overtime

Five players scored in double figure, and Angel Rivera and Christiaan Jones sank key three-pointers in overtime as Stetson rallied for an 81-77 win at South Alabama on Wednesday.

The Hatters (4-2) nearly won the game in regulation but a wild sequence at the end of the second half saw South Alabama (3-3) convert a three-pointer with less than three seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.

Rivera, who finished with nine points and four assists, nailed a three-pointer from the left cornet to start the extra period for a 73-70 lead. After a free throw by the Jaguars, Jones followed with a three from the left wing and Stetson suddenly had a 76-71 advantage with 3:41 to play.

A free throw by Rivera, two more for Divine Myles and the Hatters led 79-73 with 32 seconds to go. Luke Doyle made another pair of freebies for an 81-75 lead with 24 seconds left to ice the game.

The Hatters started slow, missing 12 of their first 14 shots from the field en route to trailing 31-26 at halftime. But Stetson shot 67 percent from the field in the second half as the offense came alive. The Hatters shot 51 percent from the field for the game.

Freshman Abayomi Iyiola led the Hatters with 16 points, also grabbing six rebounds before fouling out late in the second half. B.J. Glasford scored 15, Myles had 14 while Doyle (11) and Jones (10) also reached double figures.

Larry Dennis snatched a season-high 10 rebounds as Stetson owned a 41-38 rebounding edge.

South Alabama's Rodrick Sikes led all scorers with 32 points.

The Hatters continue their road trip when they visit North Dakota State, 8 p.m., Saturday.
