Hatters Unable to Withstand Camels Runs

DeLand, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters survived a 17-2 run in the first half by visiting Campbell but were unable to get past a 14-0 run over an almost four minute stretch in the second half, falling to the Camels 85-78 at the Edmunds Center Thursday night.

Stetson (5-4) ended the Camels' streak on a driving basketball by Divine Myles with 4:13 to play, but the Hatters were unable to mount a final push, falling to the Camels (4-4) for the seventh consecutive time, dating back to the 2008-09 season.

The Hatters struggled to keep the Camels off the glass through the first half, allowing Campbell a 25-11 advantage on the boards. The Camels also connected on seven-of-nine three point attempts in the opening half, building a lead to as many as 16 points, 35-19.

Stetson bounced back from that deficit, closing the half on a 12-6 run to trail by 10, 41-31, at the break. The Hatters continued that hot play to open the second half, closing with within 45-41 in the first three and a half minutes.

The Hatters continued to chip away at the Campbell lead, closing to within a basket on two occasions and to within one, 51-50, on a three-pointer by Angel Rivera with 12:40 to play.

The Camels continued to cling to their slim lead as leading scorer Chris Clemons sliced his way to the basket for consecutive layups. Rivera answered for the Hatters with consecutive layups of his own as Stetson tied the game at 60 with 8:25 to play.

Campbell continued to take advantage of the Hatters with back-door cuts and by beating Stetson down the floor for easy baskets over the next four minutes, putting together a 14-0 run to essentially put the game out of reach.

Stetson continued to battle with Myles leading the way, but the Camels connected on seven of eight from the free throw line over the final minute to put the game away.

Myles led all scorers in the game with a season-high 27 points and also led the Hatters with nine rebounds while adding four assists and three steals. Rivera finished with 13 points while B.J. Glasford added 12 to go with a career-high eight steals.

Senior forward Shane Whitfield led and sophomore guard Marcus Burk led the Camels with 20 points each. Clemons was held to 15 points and Cory Gensler added 12.

Notes:
  • With his 27 points on Thursday, Divine Myles moved into ninth place on the Stetson career-scoring chart with 1,461 points. He moved past Bob Jenkins (1964-68) and is now 30 points from tying Frank Burnell (1979-83) for eighth on the scoring list.
  • Junior Leo Goodman made his season debut for the Hatters on Thursday. Goodman had been sidelined by an ankle injury, but connected on a three-pointer with seconds of entering the game. He finished the night with five points in 20 minutes of playing time.
  • The Hatters continued to do a great job protecting the ball, committing just six turnovers in the game against Campbell while forcing the Camels into 16 turnovers. Stetson turned those takeaways into 21 points.
  • Stetson point guard Angel Rivera was held without an assist for the first time this season. Rivera came into the game ranked first in the ASUN in assists per game.
  • The Hatters will have less than 24 hours to get over the loss to Campbell because Edward Waters will visit on Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest at the Edmunds Center. That will be the final game for the Hatters in the Hoops in the Heartland Tournament. Stetson is 2-1 so far in that event.
