Megan Vincent Providing Steady Play for the Hatters

Stetson travels to the FAU Holiday Classic This Weekend

DeLand, Fla. -- When Megan Vincent first arrived on Stetson's campus this past summer, she envisioned much her of freshman season would be spent watching and learning from senior forward Sarah Sagerer, last year's ASUN Defensive Player of the Year and first team all-conference performer.

"I was expecting to play behind Sarah and be her backup," Vincent recalled. "She is a great player, so that was what I thought I was going to do.  All of a sudden, she couldn't play, and I have some big shoes to fill."

While Sagerer remains sidelined with an injury, Vincent has made some impressive strides this season.  Through 14 games, the 6-foot-4 forward is averaging 3.6 points and 5.4 rebounds-per-game, and her 25 blocked shots leads the ASUN.  Vincent is also shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and averaging over 21 minutes-per-game.

"I think 'Megs' has done an outstanding job," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "She gets better and better every day. Her progress has been tremendous.  It is not the role we expected her to play, but I think she has handled it really well.  She has handled it like a veteran."

Last week, Vincent posted two strong outings back-to-back in the Hatter Classic, which earned her ASUN Freshman of the Week honors on Tuesday.

"I think she has gotten a lot better on the help side and being a good defender for us," Bria said.  "She is starting to alter some shots.  She has always been a great passer.  She is a really good passer in our offense."

The Keller, Texas native credits her coaches and teammates, including Sagerer, for helping her improve throughout the season.

"I think I've grown quite a bit," Vincent said. "I think I have gotten better inside and, of course, blocking shots.  That is one of my key jobs.  I still have a lot of room to grow, but I think I have been doing a lot better."

Calm, Cool, and Collected

Watch Vincent play and you probably won't see many outward signs of emotion.  Whether she battles for an offensive rebound and putback basket or happens to commit a turnover, her demeanor never seems to waver.

"I try not to get nervous and not to let things distract me during games," Vincent said.  "I am pretty calm, usually.  Even on the inside, I am pretty calm."

"You just never know with her because she is always the same," Bria said.  "That's been a little different for me, but I think there are some advantages to that.  I think it has to do with the concentration level that she has."

Does anything get Vincent rattled during games?

"Usually if it is a close game, I start to get a little anxious, but that's about it. If I make a turnover, I try not to get too excited because then you just do worse."

Vincent and the Hatters hope to continue their steady play this weekend as the team travels to the FAU Holiday Classic in Boca Raton.  Stetson (8-6) will face UMKC (2-10) at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon at FAU Arena.  The first game of the day features FAU (4-5) and Delaware State (1-10).  Saturday's schedule will feature a consolation game at noon and a championship at 2:30 p.m.

The contests will be Stetson's final two non-conference games of the year.  Winners of two straight and five out of seven, the Hatters will look to keep the momentum going into the start of conference play next week.

"I think we are doing good," Vincent said about the team overall. "We are growing. We are a young team. We have a lot to do (to improve), but I think we have progressively gotten better this season."
