Hatters Fall to Fresno State in Season Opener

DeLAND—Sam Maguire and Lindsay Summers each scored three goals for Stetson, but Fresno State proved to be too much as the Hatters suffered an 18-9 loss in their season-opener, Thursday at the Athletic Training Center.

Both teams started the game slowly, with neither scoring in the first five minutes. The Hatters finally broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Maddie Holvey with 24:36 left in in the half. Summers followed four minutes later with her first goal, and Stetson led 2-0.

The Bulldogs, however, responded by scoring the next six goals of the half, and led 6-2 at the break.

After Fresno State took a 7-2 lead, Maguire and Hallie Merz scored consecutive goals for Stetson as the Hatters pulled to within 7-4.

The game continued to ebb-and-flow as Stetson matched a three-goal flurry by Fresno State with three goals of their own. After Maguire, Summers and Holvey each scored the Hatters found themselves down by a 10-7 count.

Fresno State scored seven of the game's next nine goals, including the final five, as the Bulldogs secured the win.

The Hatters nearly matched Fresno State in shots as the Bulldogs owned a slim, 34-30, advantage.

Stetson goalie Liza Diamond made eight saves in her collegiate debut. Her counterpart for Fresno State, Laurel Maunder, made 10 saves.

In addition to her three goals, Summers also had two assists. Holvey, who finished with two goals, led Stetson with five draw controls and two caused turnovers.

The Hatters return to action when they host Colorado, Sunday at noon.
