Late Run Lifts FGCU Past Hatters in Regular Season Finale

FORT MYERS, Fla.—An offensive dry spell in the game's final five minutes proved costly as Stetson closed out its regular season with an 80-70 loss at Atlantic Sun Conference foe FGCU, Thursday at Alico Arena.

The loss means the Hatters and Eagles will meet again next Monday in the quarterfinals of the ASUN Tournament. Top-seeded FGCU will host eighth seed Stetson at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.

Leading 62-60 with 5:16 to play, Stetson (11-20 overall, 3-11 ASUN) managed just two field goals the rest of the way as FGCU (23-7, 12-2) closed the game on a 20-8 run to claim the ASUN regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the ASUN Tournament.

Stetson limited FGCU to 42 percent shooting from the field, including an 8 of 33 effort from beyond the arc. But the Eagles owned a 48-33 advantage on the glass and used that to get 26 second-chance points, to just six for the Hatters.

The Hatters took control of the game early, leading 17-5 after a steal and layup by Luke Doyle with 12:12 left before halftime. FGCU slowly chipped away and regained the lead when a jumper by Antravious Simmons made it a 28-26 game.

The Eagles led 31-30 at halftime. The second half featured two ties and 12 lead changes as the team battled back-and-forth over the final 20 minutes.

Derick Newton led Stetson with 16 points. Divine Myles had 13 and eight assists, and Brian Pegg scored 13 points – all in the second half -- on 6 of 9 shooting.

FGCU's Zach Johnson led all scorers with 24 points, on the strength of 6 of 11 shooting from three-point range.

News & Notes
Divine Myles moved into 15th place on Stetson's career scoring list. He now has 1,311 points, three behind A.J. Smith for 14th all-time … Myles also tied a season-high with 8 assists … Larry Dennis led the Hatters with 8 rebounds, his 2nd-best total of the year … Luke Doyle made one 3-pointer, tying his own school record of 72 in a season, which he set last year.

Quotable
"We didn't do a good job of rebounding the ball. That's been a nemesis of ours. They got too many second-chance points. They made more plays than we did. It was a good game. I thought our guys played hard and they competed, but it's just not enough. I'm really proud of the defensive effort, just not so proud about not making enough plays down the stretch. The good news is we get a chance to play them again in a few days. We just have to make sure we're ready and prepared to go." – Stetson head coach Corey Williams
