Hatters Extend Win Streak to Seven and Move Into a Tie For First

Brianti Saunders reaches another scoring milestone

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Sarah Sagerer scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Stetson extended its win streak to seven with a 62-44 victory over North Florida Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.

Coupled with Jacksonville's win over FGCU, the Hatters (18-5, 7-1 ASUN) moved into a tie for first place in the ASUN standings.

Defensively, the Hatters held their fourth straight opponent below 50 points for the first time in school history.

Stetson overcame a rocky first half that saw a 16-3 first quarter lead dwindle down to just 26-24 by halftime.  The second quarter ended with Breana Bey and Sagerer on the bench with two fouls apiece and Saunders out with an injury.

"They are good team," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said about the Ospreys.  "They are well coached.  We knew they would be tough to play here, but I thought our response in the second half was really good."

Saunders did return for the second half, and hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter. That was part of a 10-0 run that gave Stetson a 19-point advantage.

"In the second half, I thought we guarded really well," Bria said.  "We turned them over a little bit and got some easy baskets.  I thought our offense, too, really started to click."

Stetson's post players took over in second half as Sagerer scored 11 of her points after the break and Bey added eight more.

"We have good leadership," Bria said.  "The players came out and cleared their heads, and we just played a lot better in the second half."

Saunders finished with 12 points to become the all-time leading scorer in Stetson basketball history, men or women.  She surpassed Kerry Blackshear's mark of 1,826 points from 1992-96. Saunders now has 1,830.

Stetson shot 41.7 percent from the floor and held a 38-31 edge on the glass.  UNF fell to 8-15, 1-7.

The Hatters will return home to face Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Notes: Stetson has won seven in a row overall for the first time since 2014-15 … The Hatters improved to 14-1 when leading at the half and 17-1 when leading after 3 … UNF's three first quarter points was a season-low for a Stetson opponent … The Hatters have won the first quarter in all eight ASUN games this year … Stetson shot just 54 percent from the free throw line.
