Hatters Break Through in Overtime Against JU

Win Streak Reaches Eight in a Row

DeLand, Fla. -- The play of McKenna Beach and Brittney Chambers helped carry the Hatters for the first 40 minutes, but it was Brianti Saunders who scored nine points in overtime to lift Stetson to a dramatic 57-47 win over visiting Jacksonville Wednesday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters won their eighth game in a row to improve to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in the ASUN.  With the victory, Stetson remains tied with FGCU for first place in the league standings.

"It was a great game," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "Both teams played well.  The defense for both teams was excellent.   They got stops, we got stops, and it just came down to a few plays."

Stetson led by just two points in overtime with under two minutes to play when Saunders hit a 3-pointer from the left corner to give Stetson a 49-44 lead.  Moments later, Beach knocked the ball away from Rolanda Hayes into the hands of Saunders, who went coast-to-cast and finished with a spin move in the lane to put the Hatters up by seven.

"It was exciting an intense," Saunders said about the game.  "Coach told us to keep fighting through and keep playing."

Chambers helped get the game to overtime with a 3-pointer of her own with 77 seconds left in regulation.

"It all started with Britt," Saunders said.  "She hit that 3 in the corner, and I really think McKenna carried us throughout the game."

Beach played a career-high 42 minutes and was a huge factor for the Hatters defensively with four steals and several other pass deflections.

"I thought McKenna Beach just put us on her back and carried us for 40 minutes on both ends," Bria said.  "She is our floor general.  She is real steady and calm when things aren't going our way.  Her play turned the game around and gave us the momentum."

Chambers led the way with 15 points while Saunders scored 14.  Sarah Sagerer, celebrating a birthday but also battling flu-like symptoms, recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.  She also had two blocks in 34 minutes.

The win was Stetson's second overtime victory of the season and improved the Hatters' home record to 11-2.

"It was a good win for us, but we are on to the next game now," Saunders said.

That game will come at 1 p.m. Saturday when the Hatters host Lipscomb at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
