Hatters Edged by Niagara

DeLAND—Stetson's Shelby Lehmann scored a career-high four goals but for the second straight game the Hatters couldn't quite catch up to their opponent as Niagara edged Stetson, 16-14, Friday at the Athletic Training Center.

Niagara (3-2) jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but three consecutive goals from Lindsay Summers (2) and Maddie Holvey gave the Hatters (0-5) a 4-3 advantage with 14:06 left in the first half.

The Purple Eagles responded with three consecutive goals of their own for a 6-4 lead. Two goals for Stetson, followed by two goals for Niagara gave the Purple Eagles an 8-6 lead at halftime.

Niagara scored three straight goals to start the second half, surging to an 11-6 lead less than five minute into the half.

The Hatters didn't go away, as Lehmann scored back-to-back goals to make it 11-8. Niagara continued to control play and keep a reasonable lead before Stetson made a final push.

Down 14-10 with 17:40 to play, the Hatters scored four of the game's final six goals, but didn't find the back of the net after Summers' goal with 6:37 to play.

Summers finished with three goals for Stetson, and Sandra Stephan added a pair of scores. Niagara was led by Rachel MacCheyne and Caroline Crump, who each scored four goals.

Stetson goalie Liza Diamond made 14 saves and had a team-high nine ground balls.

The Hatters next visit Towson, Noon, Sunday. Stetson returns home to host Wagner, 6 p.m., Thursday, March 16.
