Hatters Edged by LaSalle, 20-18

DeLAND—Six different players scored at least two goals for Stetson but the Hatters didn't have quite enough to get past LaSalle as the Explorers escaped with a 20-18 win, Monday at the Athletic Training Center.

Sandra Stephan led the Hatters with a career-high four goals, adding five ground balls. Sam Maguire and Shelby Lehmann each scored three.

Stetson started strong, getting goals from Maguire and Maddie Holvey in the first 2:47 of the game. But LaSalle was quick to answer, scoring seven straight as the Explorers (2-2) took control of the game.

Down 7-2, the Hatters chipped away and got back in the game. Four straight goals over the span of two minutes and 41 seconds made it a 7-6 game. The Hatters trailed 10-7 at halftime.

In the second half, the Explorers kept Stetsonat arm's length, never letting the Hatters get closer than one goal. Stetson was able to get within one doing so three times in the last 30 minutes, the last time coming on a Lindsay Summers goal with 6:05 to play. That score made it an 18-17 game, but the Hatters didn't score again.

As a team the Hatters out-shot LaSalle, 47-34, and won more draws (21-18). Goalie Liza Diamond made eight saves for the Hatters, while LaSalle's Lynne Frankel made 10.

Allee Ilgenfritz led LaSalle with five goals.

The Hatters next host Niagara, 4 p.m., Friday.
