Hatters Capture Fifth Straight Win in Overtime Fashion

DeLAND—Sandra Stephan scored the game-tying goal with 21 seconds left in regulation and Sam Maguire scored the game winner in overtime as Stetson rallied for a 19-18 win over Kennesaw State in Atlantic Sun Conference play, Thursday at the Athletic Training Center.

The win, Stetson's fifth straight, improves the Hatters (5-8) to 5-1 in ASUN play and moves the Hatters into a tie for second place in the conference standings with Saturday's opponent Mercer.

The heroics by Stephan and Maguire was made necessary after the Hatters were unable to hold an eight-goal lead in the second half. Julia Lozano's goal with 25:09 to play gave the Hatters a 14-6 lead. But Kennesaw State ripped out seven straight goal to get within 14-13 with 18:29 left.

Back-to-back goals for Stetson by Taylor Patrizi and Lindsay Summers made it 16-13 and appeared to give the Hatters some breathing room. But Kennesaw State scored five of the next six goals and took an 18-17 lead on a score with 1:32 to go.

Stetson seemed doomed as the Owls won the draw after their go-ahead goal. But they turned it over in front of the Stetson net and, after a foul and a timeout, Stephan our-ran the entire KSU defense for a one-on-one goal to tie the game with 21 seconds left.

In overtime, Maguire scored as the clock was winding down in the first period, sending the Hatters to yet another win.

Patrizi led Stetson with a career-high five goals. Maguire had five goals, and Stephan was one of four Hatters to finish with two goals. Patrizi won nine draws, a school single-game record.

Taylor McGhee led Kennesaw State with four goals.

The Hatters host Mercer, Noon, Saturday.
