Hatters Open Season With OT Loss

Detroit Mercy's Spiro Pliakos scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner less than five minutes into overtime, as Stetson suffered a 2-1 season-opening loss, Friday at Titan Field in Detroit.

Pliakos' goal spoiled the debut of first-year Stetson head coach Kyle Gookins, who is serving as a head coach for the first time after spending nine seasons as an assistant at Charlotte.

"We kind of weathered a storm in the first half," Gookins said. "It took us 30 minutes and goal by Detroit to wake us up a bit. But once we scored, we were the aggressors and played on our front foot. I thought our ability to win tackles and not back down was pretty impressive. I wasn't sure how we would respond to physical match but I'm happy with what I saw."

Pliakos scored on a scramble in front of the net following a throw-in by Max Becker. Stetson keeper Braeden Luna, who made three saves in the game, was unable to corral the shot.

The Titans took an early 1-0 lead on Pliakos' goal in the 22nd minute, but Stetson answered when Finn Busmann chipped a shot over the keeper from 25 yards out in the 38th minute, tying it at 1-1. Joseph Alamo assisted.

Tied at halftime, the Hatters were the aggressor in the second half, out-shooting the Titans by a 6-1 margin in the period. Stetson had several chances, including a header from 15 yards out in the final seconds of regulation, but couldn't penetrate the goal line.

Detroit finished with a 17-11 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Hatters continue their road trip when they visit Western Michigan, 11 a.m., Sunday.
