Morton, Defense Lead Hatters Past UTRGV

Annette Morton scored the game's only goal late in the first half and Stetson's defense made the tally stand up as the Hatters earned a hard-fought 1-0 win at Texas-Rio Grande Valley, Friday in windy Edinburg, Texas.

Stetson wins for the second straight game and will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their second game of the UTRGV Tournament on Saturday.

The Hatters won despite the wind and despite playing a man down after Ellie Hackett received her second yellow card and was sent off with 10 minutes to play.

"It's always tough to get a result on the road but especially for how windy it was," head coach Manoj Khettry said. "We created some good chances in the second half but didn't capitalize and responded well to playing a man down for the last 10 minutes. Getting here was unbelievably difficult in terms of travel and I'm sure we could use that as an excuse but I'm glad we found a way to score a goal and win."

Despite dominating play throughout the first half it took the Hatters (3-2-0) nearly all 45 minutes to score. With less than a minute to play in the half, Adrianna Suarez was fouled just outside the box. Morton blasted a free kick past UTRGV keeper Kinga Szemik and Stetson took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

"Annette's free kick goal was terrific," said Khettry. "She hit it pure and I'm glad we scored before half-time because we deserved a goal based on our play in the first half."

Stetson's defense turned in a stellar effort in the second half, turning away several solid chances by the Vaqueros, including a free kick from 25 yards away with less than 30 seconds to play which keeper Emily Plotz snagged before it could do any damage.

Plotz finished with three saves as the Vipers recorded 10 shots. Stetson took 13 shots for the game.
