Hatters Sweep Savannah State for First Win

Eva Deisa leads with nine kills

Boca Raton, Fla. -- Eva Deisa led a balanced offensive attack with nine kills as Stetson swept Savannah State 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-20) Saturday afternoon at the FAU Invitational.

The Hatters hit a season-high .341 en route to their first win of the season.  It was also the first career victory for Stetson head coach Yang Deng.

"Our focus was better today," Deng said.  "We were able to take care of the things we needed to do on our side of the net.  We still have to function at a certain level regardless of who our opponent is, and I think we played better in the third set."

The Hatters collected 40 kills as a team, including seven each by Rebecca Ingram, Riley Nieporte, and Hao Jin.  Shelby Connors added six kills in nine attempts for a .667 attack percentage.

Naina Ivanova helped run the offense with 31 assists, adding three kills and two aces.  Chelcie Spence picked up 10 digs.

Savannah State fell to 2-7.

Nieporte and Jin each earned a spot on the FAU Invitational all-tournament team.

The victory also punctuates a long 10-day road trip for the Hatters, which featured five different hotel stops and over 2,250 miles of travel.

Stetson will begin ASUN Conference play at home next Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast.  First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
