Late Goal Lifts Hatters to Win at Mercer

Gabriel Diniz scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute and Stetson men's soccer capped a long 10 days on the road with a 2-1 win at Mercer, Sunday in Macon, Ga.

The Hatters (2-5) have been away from home due in large part to Hurricane Irma since departing for the NIU Adidas Invitational on Sept. 7. Head coach Kyle Gookins was understandably pleased with his team's performance.

"I'm incredibly proud of the guys today," Gookins said. "We battled hard against a really good Mercer team. We knew it would take a complete team effort and everyone played a part in the result. We are improving each game and we will train hard this week to prepare for North Florida."

Diniz scored from outside the box, drilling a shot into the upper right 90 to give the Hatters a 2-1 advantage. Elvis Menayese assisted on the score.

Finn Busmann got the Hatters on the board late in the first half, scoring his second goal of the season in the 41st minute. Daniel O'Brien was credited with the assist.

After Stetson led 1-0 at halftime, Mercer tied it up in the 51st minute in a header goal from Conner Antley.

Stetson keeper Joe Melong faced 14 shots and made one save to get the win. The Hatters took 12 shots, including five on-goal.

The Hatters next open ASUN Conference play when they visit North Florida, 7 p.m., Saturday.
