Hatters Drop a Pair of 3-1 Decisions on Friday

Anna Bezhan tallies 17 kills on the day

Houston, Texas -- Stetson dropped a pair of matches to Houston and Mississippi State by identical 3-1 scores Friday on the first day of the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup at the University of Houston.

The Cougars (2-2) won by scores of 25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, and the Bulldogs (6-4) won by scores of 25-20, 17-25, 25-8, 25-17. Both matches followed a similar pattern as Stetson (0-8) won the second set in each contest but could not break through after the intermission.

Against Houston, the Hatters shook off a slow start to take the second set 25-22.  Stetson led 4-0 and 9-3 early, but the Cougars battled back to pull even at 22-22.  After a Stetson timeout, the Hatters got a pair of kills from Anna Bezhan plus a Houston attack error to win the set and pull even in the match.

Overall, Rebecca Ingram led the Hatters with nine kills while Eva Deisa added eight and Bezhan tallied seven.  Naina Ivanova had a 31-assist, 10-dig performance, marking her fifth double-double of the season.  Chelcie Spence picked up a season-high 24 digs to lead the back row.  Bezhan also collected 11 digs.

Stetson had nine blocks as a team, including two solo blocks from Shelby Connors.  Julie Varga, Hao Jin, and Deisa each tallied three block assists.

Houston outhit Stetson .196 to .064

Against Mississippi State, the Hatters cruised to a 25-17 victory in the second set behind a .355 attack percentage.  Spence finished the frame with a service ace.

For the match, Deisa and Bezhan each recorded 10 kills while Varga hit .583 (7-0-12).   Ivanova dished out 36 assists, and Charlotte Earnhart picked up 12 digs.

Khristian Carr had 22 kills to lead Mississippi State.

The Hatters will face McNeese State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
