Hatters Edge USC Upstate Behind Historic Fourth Quarter Rally

Stetson battled back from down 14 to Win

DeLand, Fla. -- Trailing by 14 points with nine minutes to play, Stetson rallied down the stretch for a monumental 62-61 come-from-behind victory over visiting USC Upstate Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (10-8, 1-1 ASUN) took the lead for good on a Brittney Chambers putback with 40.1 to go, capping the team's largest fourth quarter comeback in school history.

"There was a lot of time," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "There was 8-10 minutes left and that's a lot of time.  I didn't think we needed to panic.  For me, you just can't try and get it all back at one time.  We got stops and we converted down the stretch."

The Hatters trailed 59-47 with 5:32 to go when Sydney Wagner's 3-pointer pulled Stetson within nine.  McKenna Beach's three-point play made it a six-point game, and a short runner from Kendall Lentz cut the deficit to four.  After a pair of Upstate free throws pushed the lead back to six, Beach buried a 3-pointer with 1:49 on the clock to pull Stetson within three.

Another defensive stop led to a Chambers' lay-up, making it a 61-60 game with 1:04 to go.  Beach then grabbed her fourth steal of the quarter to give Stetson the ball with a chance at the lead.

After a 30-second timeout, Chambers took the inbounds pass, drove the lane, missed her first attempt but grabbed the rebound and put in the eventual game-winner.

"We just kept encouraging each other," Chambers said about the comeback. "(McKenna and I) tried to pick up the group. 'Ken' brought a lot of energy and that's what we needed."

Bria praised the play of both Beach and Chambers down the stretch.

"You have to have some people make some plays, both offensively and defensively, and I thought those two did that."

Beach and Chambers each scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds, none bigger than Chambers' offensive rebound on the go-ahead basket.

"I am trying to get on the offensive glass more," Chambers said. "(Rebounding) is a big emphasis, so I am just going in strong, getting my own rebound if I don't finish the first time and putting it back in."

The Hatters led 28-25 at the break, but Upstate (6-11, 1-1) outscored Stetson 27-12 in the third quarter behind five 3-pointers.

"I thought the third quarter just killed us, but what I really liked about what we did is I thought our team just fought," Bria said.  "In the fourth quarter, probably the last five or six minutes we played with a real sense of urgency."

After shooting just 25 percent in the first three quarters, the Hatters were 9-for-19 (.474) in the fourth quarter.  The victory improved Stetson to 7-1 at home this season.

The Hatters will look for a weekend sweep at 1 p.m. Monday against NJIT.
