Hatters Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to Jacksonville

Jacksonville's J.D. Notae sank two free throws with five-tenths of a second to play, snuffing out a late Stetson rally and handing the Hatters a heartbreaking 68-67 loss in ASUN Conference play, Monday at Edmunds Center.

Stetson's Luke Doyle gave the Hatters a 67-66 lead when he banked in a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 4.8 seconds to play.

After JU called a timeout, Notae took the inbounds pass and moved the left wing to attempt desperation three. The Hatters were whistled for a foul on the shot and -- after a replay review by the officials to check the game clock – Notae went to the line and made two of three shots to give the Dolphins the victory.

For the second straight game, the Hatters (10-15, 2-6) struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 34 percent from the field. But Stetson found its offensive footing late in the game, giving the Hatters a chance down the stretch.

Stetson trailed 37-30 at halftime. After briefly taking the lead early in the second half, the Hatters fell behind by double digits when JU's Jaylyn Hinton made a pair of free throws for a 57-47 advantage with 8:31 to play.

Jacksonville (12-13, 6-2) maintained a multi-possession lead until the final media timeout, when Stetson began its comeback. With the Hatters down 63-57 with 3:34 to play, Divine Myles and Angel Rivera combined for four straight free throws, pulling the Hatters within 63-61 with 1:22 to go.

After the team exchanged single free throws, Notae gave the Dolphins a 66-62 lead with 33 seconds left. But Myles hit a layup to make it 66-64 and Doyle came through with his big shot after JU's Antwon Clayton missed a pair at the line with 13 seconds to play.

Doyle led the Hatters with 17 points, going 5 of 11 from 3-point range. Myles added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Abayomi Iyiola had 13 and Angel Rivera added 12 points.

Notae led JU with 20 points.

The Hatters next visit North Florida, 7 p.m., Saturday.
