SMU Stops Hatters, 3-1

SMU used a balance offensive attack and an assist from the weather to get a 3-1 win over Stetson in men's soccer, Monday at the Athletic Training Center.

Stetson (4-5-1) control the initial moments of the game, and used its aggressiveness to get an early lead.

Gabriel Diniz scored his first goal of the year in the ninth minute, taking a pass from Erwan Colas and weaving through defenders in front of the box for the score. With an early lead and a lot of momentum, the Hatters appeared to be in control of the match.

But Mother Nature intervened a few minutes later when lightning and heavy rains delayed the game for over 90 minutes, giving time for SMU (5-4-1) to regroup. The Mustangs came out of the unexpected break strong, and eventually tied the match in the 37th minute on a goal by Garrett McLaughlin.

SMU continued to push as the match moved into the second half. The Mustangs eventually went on top with a goal by Akean Shackelford in the 70th minute. Emil Cuello put the game away for SMU when he broke free for a goal nine minutes later to make it 3-1.

The Mustangs out-shot the Hatters, 13-8. Stetson goalkeeper Justin Snyder made three saves.

The Hatters return to action when they visit FGCU, 7 p.m., Saturday in Fort Myers.
