Hatters Comeback Falls Short at Jacksonville

Stetson Ties School Record for Solo Blocks

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Stetson battled back from an 0-2 deficit to force a fifth set, but Jacksonville held on down the stretch for a 3-2 victory Tuesday night at Swisher Gym.

Mallory Mattingly recorded 21 kills to lead the Dolphins (3-18, 2-7 ASUN), who won by scores of 25-13, 25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 15-12.

The Hatters (12-9, 4-5 ASUN) had been nearly automatic in fifth sets this season, going 4-1 in their previous five winner-take-all frames.  Jacksonville, however, led 8-5 at the changeover Tuesday and later extended the lead to 11-7.  The Hatters were able to slice the deficit to 12-11 and 13-12, but JU netted the final two points to seal the win.

With her team trailing 0-2 at the break, head coach Yang Deng employed a 6-2 offense in the third set, leaving three hitters in the front row, and Stetson quickly turned the match around.  Eva Deisa had five kills in the third set and the Hatters recorded eight blocks as a team in a 25-22 win.

In the fourth set, Stetson used a 9-0 run midway through the frame to seize momentum. The Hatters hit .276 and picked up 20 digs in the set to tie the match 2-2.

The Dolphins recorded 12 kills in the final set to earn a split in the season series.

Deisa led the Hatters with 10 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.  She also added four blocks and two aces.  Julie Varga added eight kills and four blocks, while Brianna Schmid registered seven kills and five blocks. Chelcie Spence led the back row with 20 digs, while Naina Ivanova and Emily DeStaffino added 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

Stetson tied a school rally-scoring era record with nine solo blocks as a team.

The Hatters have a 10-day break before beginning a three-game homestand on Oct. 26 vs. Lipscomb.

Notes: Stetson unveiled new black jerseys on Tuesday ... The Hatters played their first five-set match in ASUN play ... The last time Stetson recorded nine solo blocks as a team was in 2003 vs. Gardner-Webb ... Chelcie Spence hit the 20-dig mark for the ninth time this season.
