Hatters Fall at Missouri State

Three players scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as Stetson suffered an 83-70 loss at Missouri State in the opening game of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, Sunday at JQH Arena in Springfield, Mo.

The Hatters (1-1) got a double-double from Abayomi Iyiola, who finished with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Joining him in double figures were Ricardo Lynch with 16 points, and Christiaan Jones finished 14.

Turnovers were a problem for the Hatters, as they made 18 for the game. Missouri State turned those miscues into 18 points.

"We can't turn the ball over the way we did and we have to show a little more toughness, especially on the road," Stetson head coach Corey Williams said. "But I thought that we didn't give up. We're a young team and we're going to learn from this."

Missouri State (3-0) led wire-to-wire but the Hatters were never really out of the game. Down 43-32 at halftime, Lynch converted a three-point play to get the Hatters within 51-43 with 17:16 to play.

The Bears eventually pushed the lead to 74-55 with 7:13 to go, but the Hatters battled back. Jones capped an 8-0 run with a three-pointer as Stetson pulled to within 74-63 with 5:18 to go. A jumper by Iyiola with 3:36 to play made it a 77-67 game but the Hatters couldn't get the lead under double digits.

Keandre Cook led five Missouri State players in double figures with 20 points.

Stetson shot just 35 percent from the field, including an 8 of 31 effort from three-point range. Missouri State finished shooting 48 percent overall.

"I thought at times we played free and at other times we were tense," Williams said. "I've got to go back and figure out why. I thought we got good looks, made some shots and got back in the game. But the truth is it's going to take some time for this team because they're all so new to it. We don't have a lot of experience back from last year. It's all new to them right now."

The Bears had a decided advantage at the free throw line, going 23 of 38 from the stripe. Stetson, meanwhile, was just 10 of 13.
