Hatters Downed at USC

USC placed four players in double figures as the Trojans downed visiting Stetson, 95-59, Wednesday at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The game was part of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.

Nick Rakocevic and Bennie Boatwright each scored 16 points to lead the Trojans (2-1). Kevin Porter, Jr., chipped in with 12 and Shaqquan Aaron added 10 points.

Christiaan Jones led Stetson (1-2) with 11 points. He was the only Hatter to score in double figures.

The Trojans took control of the game early as Stetson missed its first seven shots. A three-pointer by Porter gave USC a 16-4 lead with 13:11 left in the first half, and the lead swelled to 30-7 with 8:11 left before the break as Stetson continued to struggle.

Stetson went on an 11-4 run over the next 4:16 to get within 34-18 on a Clay Verk three-pointer, but USC still managed a 39-24 lead at halftime.

The Hatters got as close as 46-32 in the early minutes of the second half, but after an Abayomi Iyiola jumper with 16:47 to go put Stetson within 14, the Trojans forced three straight turnovers and converted them into a 53-32 advantage. Stetson never got any closer.

Stetson shot 31 percent from the field for the game, including 4 of 22 from beyond the three point arc. The Trojans shot 56 percent and out-rebounded Stetson, 46-38.

The Hatters next visit Southeastern Louisiana, 4 p.m., Saturday in Hammond, La.
