Hatters Fall Short vs. UCF in Home Opener

The Hatters hit 11 3-pointers as a team

DeLand, Fla. -- An early 17-0 Knights run ultimately proved to be the difference in the game as UCF defeated Stetson 78-55 Wednesday night at the Edmunds Center.

McKenna Beach led the Hatters (0-2) with 21 points and Bianca Fizouaty added 10.

UCF (2-0) led by 20 after the first quarter, but the Hatters cut that deficit to 19 at the half and to 14 after 3.

"Obviously the first quarter killed us," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "I think it took us awhile to adapt to the game. We can't take that long against a very good team, and they are a very good team. We just dug ourselves a huge hole in the first quarter, but I thought in the other quarters we competed. I was proud of our effort to stay in it. I didn't feel like we ever gave up, we just can't get down like that to good teams."

Stetson hit 11 3-pointers in the game, including four by Beach.  Fizouaty hit three 3s and Mackenzie Davis hit a pair, finishing with nine points.

UCF held a 43-18 advantage on the glass.

"We have to do a better job rebounding," Bria said.  "I thought we did a good job against their pressure - we didn't turn the ball over, but we've got to rebound."

Sydnee McDonald led the Knights with 24 points.

The Hatters will return to action Nov. 23-25 at the Challenge in Music City.  Stetson will face Marist, Wright State and Hofstra during the three-day event.

Notes: Sarah Sagerer made her season debut but left early in the first half due to injury ... McKenna Beach played in her 99th career game. She topped 20 points for the second time this season and for the fourth time in her career ... Mackenzie Davis led the team with five steals.
