Marist Holds Off Hatters 76-69

Nashville, Tenn. -- Stetson cut a 17-point fourth quarter deficit down to four before eventually falling to Marist 76-69 Friday afternoon in the first game of the Challenge in Music City at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.

The Hatters (0-3) put four players in double figures, including Sarah Sagerer and McKenna Beach who led with 16 points apiece.  Sagerer added seven rebounds and two blocks in her first full game in over a year.

The Red Foxes (4-0) jumped out to a 24-18 lead after the first quarter and held off the Hatters the rest of the way.  Marist shot 44 percent from behind the arc and hit 12 3-pointers.

"We are figuring some things out, but I like the fight of our team," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "Marist is a very good team - they are a seasoned team.  I am encouraged by some of the adjustments we made and how we played in the second half."

Marist led by 17 with 7:29 to go and by 13 with 3:19 remaining.  The Hatters then went on a 10-1 run as Sagerer and Beach each hit from long range and Megan Vincent added a pair of layups, cutting the lead to 69-65 with 1:12 to go.  The Red Foxes, however, hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.

Addi Walters went 4-for-5 from the floor with a pair of 3s and finished with 12 points.  Vincent scored 11 and pulled down six boards.  Jon'Nita Henry added nine points off the bench.

Friday's contest was the first opportunity for 6-3/6-4 forwards Sagerer and Vincent to be on the court at the same time.

"It gives us a major rebounding advantage," Bria said about the pairing of the two post players. "Defensively we are so much better because we are so much bigger.  It gives us a lot more versatility having them both in the game."

The Hatters shot season-highs of 47 percent from the floor and 93 percent (14-15) from the free throw line.  Marist held a slight 33-30 edge on the glass.

Alana Gilmer scored 23 points to led the Red Foxes.

Stetson will return to action at 1 p.m. ET Saturday against Wright State as the Challenge in Music City continues.

Notes: McKenna Beach played in her 100th game ... Mackenzie Davis made her first career start ... Jon'Nita Henry scored her first career points as a Hatter ... Megan Vincent hit her first career 3-pointer ... The Hatters led 37-6 in bench points.
