Colonials Hold Off Hatters

Three players scored in double figures for Stetson but Robert Morris shot nearly 58 percent in the second half as the Colonials held off the Hatters for an 81-72 win, Monday at Edmunds Center.
 
Robert Morris (3-2) led 38-36 at halftime and padded its advantage by opening the second half on a 13-5 run. A three-point play by Koby Thomas gave the Colonials a 51-41 lead with 16:47 to play.
 
Four straight points by Ricardo Lynch pulled the Hatters (1-4) within 51-45. The teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes until the Hatters got back-to-back buckets by Raine McKeython (3-pointer) and Kenny Aninye to make it 59-56 with 10:49 left.
 
RMU quickly pushed the lead back up to nine points when a dunk by Thomas capped an 8-2 burst,  making it 67-58 with 7:24 to go. Stetson got as close as 75-70 on a jumper by Marques Sumner with 1:28 left, but Robert Morris sealed the game by going 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final  66 seconds.
 
Sumner led the Hatters with a season-high 16 points. Lynch (12) and Aninye (11) combined for 23 points off the bench. Stetson shot almost 48 percent from the field but was just 6 of 24 from beyond the arc.
 
The Colonials shot 54 percent for the game, including a 10-of-22 effort from three-point range. Josh Williams led the Colonials with 18 points, while Thomas had 16 and seven rebounds.
 
Robert Morris was 19 of 24 from the free throw line, compared to just 6 of 8 for the Hatters.

  • Stetson's bench combined to go for 17-for-27 (.630) from the floor for 41 points
  • Marques Sumner scored a career-high 16 points (7-for-19 shooting) and played a season-high 31 minutes
  • Ricardo Lynch (12 points) scored in double figures for the third time this season
  • Kenny Aninye (11 points) reached double figures for the first time this season, tying his career high set last season at Green Bay
  • Nine different Hatters scored field goals in the game
