Hatters Fall in Overtime

Tyler Creamer's layup off a missed free throw tied the game with :0.4 to play in regulation and VMI used that momentum for an 87-79 overtime win against Stetson, Friday at Edmunds Center in DeLand, Fla.

With the Hatters (1-5) leading, 69-66, Stetson's Marques Sumner fouled VMI's Bubba Parham 35 feet from the basket with 1.9 seconds left in regulation. Parham, who finished with a game-high 30 points, made the first free throw but intentionally missed the season. The ball caromed right to Creamer and he gathered the missed shot and beat the clock for a game-tying layup.

The Keydets (5-2) made just 3 of 9 shots from the field in overtime, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Greg Parham and Sarju Patel gave VMI an 80-72 lead with 2:45 to play. Stetson never got closer than seven points (86-79) the rest of the way.

Bubba Parham exploded for 19 points in the first half, but the Hatters and Keydets were deadlocked at 35-35 at halftime. Stetson opened the second half with an 8-0 for a 43-35 lead but the Hatters couldn't put the Keydets away.

Stetson's lead eventually reached 46-37 on a three-point play by Leo Goodman with 16:33 to go, but VMI slowly chipped away and Myles Lewis gave the Keydets their first lead since late in the first half when his layup made it 63-62 with 4:59 to go.

The teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of regulation before the Hatters appeared to gain some distance. With Stetson leading, 67-66, Marques Sumner went to the line for a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to play, and made one of two for a 68-66 lead.

Jake Stephens missed a trey on the other end for VMI, and the Keydets fouled to stop the clock. Raine McKeython went to the line with a chance to put the game away with two free throws. But the sophomore made just one of two, opening the door for an improbable finish.

Five Hatters scored in double figures. Abayomi Iyiola recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Goodman led the Hatters with 13 points. Kenny Aninye (12), Sumner (11) and Ricardo Lynch (10) each reached double digits.

Bubba Parham finished 9 of 24 from the field and 7 of 9 from the free throw line. Leiws added 15 points for VMI.
