Hatters Edged By Tulsa 55-54

McKenna Beach Scores 20 Points

Tulsa, Okla. -- McKenna Beach scored a game-high 20 points and Megan Vincent pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds, but Tulsa held off Stetson down the stretch to post a 55-54 season-opening victory Tuesday afternoon at the Reynolds Center.

The Hatters (0-1) had four opportunities to take the lead in the final 30 seconds including two shots at the buzzer but none of them fell.

"It was tough to lose this one," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I thought we had a lot of chances to put them away and a lot of chances to win the game, and we just didn't execute down the stretch."

Stetson trailed by eight early in the third quarter but chipped away at the lead.  Beach's 3-pointer at the 2:23 mark gave Stetson a 39-38 advantage. However, three more lead changes quickly followed and Tulsa led 45-42 after 3.

In the fourth quarter, freshman Bianca Fizouaty's corner 3 put Stetson back in the lead, and Vincent's lay-up off a lob pass from Addi Walters made it 50-45 with 5:43 to go. Tulsa battled back to tie the game at 52 and again at 54, and Crystal Polk's free throw with 39 seconds left proved to be the difference.

In her first game as a senior, Beach registered 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists while playing a full 40 minutes.

"I thought McKenna gave us everything she could, we just have to have some people go along with her as far as the effort on both ends," Bria said.  "We'll make the corrections and get better.  It's a long season."

Walters added 11 points for the Hatters, who shot just 30 percent from the floor.  Tulsa (1-0) shot 32 percent and got 15 points from Polk.

Stetson will host UCF for its home opener on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

Notes: Freshmen Bianca Fizouaty, Rosalee Nicholson and Mackenzie Davis, along with juniors Jon'Nita Henry and Addi Walters, all made their Hatter debuts ...
