Slow Start Stymies Hatters in Loss at UCF

Ricardo Lynch, Raine McKeython and Kenny Aninye each scored in double figured for Stetson but the Hatters started slow and never recovered in a 90-65 loss to UCF, Sunday at CFE Arena in Orlando.

Stetson (2-10) missed its first eight shots of the game as the Knights (9-2) raced out to a 15-0 lead. Jahlil Rawley finally broke the ice for the Hatters with a layup at the 15:08 mark, but Stetson never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Despite the poor start, the Hatters had a chance to cut the lead down even further in the final minutes of the first half. Back-to-back baskets by Ricky Gouety and Rawley pulled the Hatters to within 36-22 with 2:52 left before the break, but the Knights closed the half with an 8-4 run and led 44-26 at halftime.

UCF continued to add to its lead in the second half. The UCF lead hit 25 points for the first time when Terrell Allen's 3-pointer made it 61-36 with 13:17 to go.

From there, the Hatters never got any closer than 18 points. That came when Keith Matthews capped a 7-0 run with a jumper in the lane to get the Hatters within 61-43 with 11:13 to play.

Lynch was 4 of 10 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 13 points, adding 6 rebounds to his line. Aninye had a team-high 5 assists to go with 10 points, while McKeython was 3 of 4 from the field and perfect on all four of his free throw attempts as he scored 11.

Aubrey Dawkins led UCF with a game-high 19 points.

Game Notes
  • Ricardo Lynch reached double figures in points for the fifth time this season but it was his first such effort in six games
  • Lynch also tied a career high with 6 rebounds
  • Raine McKeython tied a season-high with 11 points, last scored against Johnson in the season opener
  • Kenny Aninye finished with 5 assists, his sixth game this season with at least five

Quoting Coach Williams
"Our starters have to play better. Our bench came in and did a terrific job and gave us a ton of energy. We had open shot after open shot early on and we couldn't make a basket. We have to get everyone playing the same way. You can't have your bench playing well and the starters not playing well. They have to all play together at one time."
