Hatters Storm Back to Down Asheville

Four Hatters scored in double figures as Stetson rallied for an 80-74 win over visiting UNC Asheville, Tuesday at Edmunds Center.

Sophomore Keith Matthews led the Hatters (3-10) with a career-high 16 points as Stetson closed the game on a 28-12 run. Kenny Aninye added 14 points and four assists, while Leo Goodman (13) and Marques Sumner (11) also scored in double figures.

Trailing 62-52 with 8:34 to play, the Hatters slowly came to life. A 3-pointer by Sumner and a layup by Jahlil Rawley pulled the Hatters to within 62-57. After the Bulldogs (1-10) twice pushed the lead back to seven points, another bucket by Sumner and a triple from Aninye got the Hats within 66-64 with 4:21 to go.

Stetson gained its first lead since the game's first basket on its next possession when Goodman got a friendly roll from the rim on 3-pointer, giving the Hatters a 67-66 lead with 3:41 left.

The Hatters continued to build their lead. Aninye made another bucket with 2:59 to go for a 69-66 edge, and Matthews made it 72-67 with a three-pointer from the wing with 2:10 left.

Asheville eventually got the lead down to two points as Coty Jude's trey with 15 seconds left made it 76-74, but Aninye and Summner combined to go 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds to seal the win.

Stetson struggled in the game's first 20 minutes, shooting 33.3 percent from the field as they trailed, 31-27, at halftime. But the Hatters rallied to shoot 70 percent from the field in the second half, finishing at 52 percent for the game.

UNCA's DeVon Baker led all scorers with 31 points. Jude finished with 20.
