Tennessee Avoids Hatters Upset Bid

Stetson Led #9 Vols By as Many as 20

Knoxville, Tenn. -- Stetson stood toe-to-toe with ninth-ranked Tennessee Wednesday night as the Hatters led 38-22 at the break and 42-22 early in third quarter.  However, the Lady Vols erased the deficit with a 22-0 run and then held on down the stretch for a 65-55 victory in front of 6,916 at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Sarah Sagerer led the way with 19 points and Addi Walters added 17 as the Hatters (1-7) played their second straight SEC opponent down to the wire.

Defensively, Stetson held Tennessee (7-0) to a season-low 65 points.

"I am proud of my team," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said after the game.  "I thought we battled and competed. To Tennessee's credit, they came out in the second half and were the aggressor. I thought they hurt us on the glass, but overall, I don't have any complaints with my team and what we did.  I thought we executed the game plan and played really, really hard."

Walters' 3-pointer on Stetson's first possession of the game set the tone early.  The Hatters surged in front by scores of 5-0, 16-8 and then 23-15 after the first quarter of play.

A 9-0 run to open the second quarter saw Stetson's lead balloon to 32-15.  McKenna Beach, Jon'Nita Henry, Mackenzie Davis and Sagerer all hit shots during the stretch.  Tennessee was held scoreless for the first 5:33 of the quarter and only connected on 2-of-9 shots from the floor for the period.  The Hatters owned a 16-point advantage at the half.

After the break, two early baskets by Walters and Sagerer gave Stetson its largest lead at 42-22.  However, a 22-0 Tennessee run followed by a lay-up from Sagerer brought the teams to a 44-44 tie after 3.

Tennessee eventually took the lead for good at the 7:21 mark of the fourth quarter.  The Hatters pulled within two with 5:21 to go and within five at the 2:14 mark, but the Lady Vols survived the upset-minded Hatters.

Rennia Davis led the Lady Vols with 24 points while Evina Westbrook scored 20.  Stetson outshot Tennessee .404 to .388 but the Lady Vols were 25-for-30 from the free throw line.

Henry added nine points for the Hatters while Beach recorded five points and four assists.

After a week off for finals, the Hatters travel to Austin, Texas to face No. 12 Texas on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m.

Notes: Tennessee had been averaging 82.2 points per game and outscoring their opponents by 28 ... The Hatters held a 30-28 edge in points in the paint ... UT turned 12 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points ... The Hatters went the line just four times but hit all four shots ... Wednesday was Stetson's sixth all-time appearance at Thompson-Boling Arena ... Like Stetson, Tennessee also has its next game at No. 12 Texas (on Sunday).
