Hatters Fall Short Against Marist, 79-75

Christiaan Jones scored a career-high 23 points but he and his Stetson teammates couldn't quite get over the hump in a 79-75 loss to Marist, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

Jones finished 8 of 14 from the field and added 9 rebounds and 3 steals to his stat line. The Hatters (2-9), however, were never able to fully erase a nine-point halftime deficit.

Down 43-34 at the break, the Hatters exchanged baskets with the Red Foxes (4-4) to start the second half until Marist got consecutive three-pointers by David Knudsen and Isaiah Lamb to build a 56-43 lead with 16:14 to go.

The Red Foxes maintained a double-digit lead for six-plus minutes, building the advantage to as much as 15 (62-47). Down 65-51, the Hatters went on a 7-0 and run. A pair of free throws by Abayomi Iyiola pulled Stetson to within 65-58 with 6:47 to play.

Stetson eventually whittled the deficit down to five when Marques Sumner made a pair of freebies to make it a 71-66 game with 2:39 left.

The Hatters continued to chip away, and Jalen Crutchfield's 3-pointer with 14 seconds left made it 77-75, the closest Stetson had been since the game's opening moments.

Marist's Matt Herasme missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 with 13 seconds to go, giving the Hatters an opening. But Stetson came up empty on the other end and Ryan Funk sank two free throws with four seconds remaining, sealing the win for Marist.

Kenny Aninye finished with 15 points and 6 assists in 35 minutes for Stetson. Teammate Clay Verk chipped in a career-high 11 points.

Lamb led Marist with 18 points.
