The Stetson University football program has announced the release of its 2018 schedule.
Â
Head coach
Roger Hughes and his Hatters will play an 11-game slate, which includes its patented eight regular season games against Pioneer Football League (PFL) opponents, along with three non-conference games.
Â
The Hatters' open play at Spec Martin Stadium on Saturday Sept. 1 against Point University, an NAIA opponent from West Point, Ga. who competes in the Mid-South Conference. It will be the first meeting between the Hatters and Skyhawks. Week two, Stetson stays in DeLand and will duel with Waldorf University. An NAIA school, located in Forest City, Iowa and competing out of the NorthStar Athletic Association Conference, it will also mark the first ever game for Hatters against them. Stetson's first road game will take place week three on Sept. 15 at Presbyterian College. The Blue Hose are currently competing out of the Big South Conference, but will be a part of the PFL starting in 2021. The two schools have not met in Stetson's modern era, but the two programs met ten times between 1938 and 1956, with Presbyterian holding an 8-0-2 overall series lead.
Â
"We have three new opponents which we are excited about, including Presbyterian which is more of a preview of a future Pioneer League game since they will be joining our conference in a few years," head coach
Roger Hughes said. "They are a good program, and it should be a great game."
Â
Stetson will then embark on its final eight games of the season, which includes four home games and four road games against PFL opponents. The Hatters' PFL schedule will start with a home contest against Marist College on Sept. 22. Stetson's remaining home games after that will be against Jacksonville University on Oct. 20, Morehead State on Nov. 3 and Valparaiso University in the season finale on Nov. 17. The Nov. 3 game against Morehead State will serve as Stetson's annual homecoming game. The Hatters' road games against the PFL includes a contest at defending champion San Diego University on Sept. 29, Drake University on Oct. 13, Davidson College on Oct. 27 and Butler University on Nov. 10. The Hatters will have a bye week during week six which is the week between the games at San Diego and Drake.
Â
"I'm very much looking forward to the 2018 season. Quite frankly, I didn't want last season to end. During the second half of the season last year, we won two games and three of the losses were on the last play or last series of the game basically," Hughes said. We were much more competitive, we had a very young team and once the guys got some experience under their belt, they showed a lot of good things, and I wish we could have had a few more games to help them really get over the hump and see the wins show up with all their effort."
