Third Quarter Costly as Hatters Fall to Jacksonville

Shania Meertens scores a season-high 15 points

Jacksonville, Fla. -- A 16-4 Dolphins run to start the third quarter proved to be the difference as Jacksonville defeated visiting Stetson 73-63 Thursday night at Swisher Gym.

The Hatters (13-10, 4-3 ASUN) cut a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit down to just four with 2:06 to go, but JU (16-6, 6-1) hit all 10 of their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

"I thought our effort was good and I thought we battled," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I just thought that first four or five minutes of the third quarter really hurt us.   We gave up entirely too many points in the third quarter."

Shania Meertens led four Hatters in double figures with a season-high 15 points.  McKenna Beach and Michelle Pruitt each scored 13 points, while Brittney Chambers added 12.  Megan Vincent recorded 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Brandi Biue scored 17 points to lead the Dolphins.

Jacksonville held a slight 37-36 advantage on the glass.

Stetson will visit UNF at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Notes:
  • The Hatters got to free throw line 26 times but made just 19 attempts.
  • Stetson held a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint
  • Jacksonville hit eight 3-pointers
  • Brittney Chambers scored in double figures for the 22nd time this season.
  • The teams combined for just 21 turnovers (11 by Stetson).
