Hatters Travel to Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Classic

Hatter freshmen having early success

Prior to last Friday, it had been 23 years since Stetson had an all-freshman battery start a season opener.  In 1995, pitcher Jean Bonnici and catcher Kelly Loughner helped Stetson defeat Florida A&M 10-0.

Friday, it was Jaime Tino in the circle and Devin Lewis behind the plate helping lead Stetson to an 8-0 victory over Akron.  Tino pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out six in her collegiate debut.

"I was so excited, because I've worked so hard to be at where I am today," Tino said.  "Being able to step on the mound last weekend made me feel as if all my hard work was paying off.
I was not nervous going into the game but once I got my first out I definitely felt more comfortable."

Lewis had a solid debut at the plate, walking in her first plate appearance, then driving in two runs with a double in the second inning.

"It felt amazing," Lewis said about playing her first collegiate game.  "I have been looking forward to that moment since I was committed as a sophomore. I felt like I really saw the ball well this weekend. I made some mistakes of course, but I learned from it and hopefully won't make those same mistakes again."

Tino and Lewis were among five freshmen starters in the Hatters' season-opener, the first time that has happened in the Frank Griffin era.   The other starters were Lizzie Shubert at short, Danielle Diaz in center field, and Kasey Fava at DP.

The Hatters finished the weekend 2-2, hitting .303 as a team and playing errorless defense in three of the four games.

"We have a lot of improving to do, but getting the first weekend under our belt as a team was really important," Lewis said.  "Having some success early really helps."

This weekend, the Hatters will travel to the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex to compete at the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Classic.  Stetson will play five games over three days, beginning with a 2:30 contest against Hofstra on Friday.
