Hatters Fall to Lipscomb Despite Big Night by Jones

Stetson freshman Christiaan Jones scored a career-high 21 points but Lipscomb shot nearly 70 percent in the second half as the Bisons pulled away for an 82-73 ASUN Conference win over the Hatters, Thursday at Edmunds Center in DeLand.

Jones finished 7 off 11 from the field with six 3-pointers, but his efforts were not enough. Overall, the Hatters (11-18, 2-3) shot just 40 percent from the field, a figure which includes 36-percent shooting in the second half.

Stetson led for much of the first half, and held a 31-25 advantage after a Divine Myles jumper with 5:49 before halftime. But the Bisons closed the half on an 11-2 run and held a 36-33 advantage at the break.

In the second half, Lipscomb kept Stetson at an arm's length as their largest lead was just 12 points when Eli Pepper's layup made it 68-56 with 6:03 to go.

Stetson chipped away at the deficit down the stretch, eventually getting to within 78-73 on the second of back-to-back 3s by Jones. But Lipscomb iced the game by going 8 for 10 from the free throw line in the final 1:10, including 4 for 4 in the last 25 seconds.

Myles joined Jones in double figures with 18 points, while Abayomi Iyiola added 10.

Lipscomb (18-9, 8-4) placed five players in double figures, led by Garrison Matthews's 17 points.

The Hatters continue their season-ending home stand when they host Kennesaw State, 4 p.m., Saturday.
