The visiting George Washington Colonials wasted no time on Saturday night in jumping on Stetson, putting a decisive end to the Hatters season-opening win streak with a 9-0 victory.
Â
The loss was the first of the year for Stetson (5-1) while GW (1-4) picked up its first win of the year. The teams will meet again on Sunday in the rubber match of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
The Colonials jumped on Stetson starting pitcher
Jack Perkins (1-1) early. Isaiah Pasteur ripped the first pitch of the game for a hit and, after moving to third on a hit by Mark Osis and a hit batter, scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Fassnacht.
Â
That was all the support GW starter Elliott Raimo (1-1) needed. The sophomore blanked the Hatters on two hits over eight innings of work. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three. Stetson didn't get its first hit until
Jonathan Meola rolled a ground ball through the infield in the sixth. He was immediately erased on a double-play grounder.
Â
The Colonials added a run in the third inning when Fassnacht delivered a two-out single to score Steve Barmakian from second.
Â
The wheels fell off for Perkins in the fourth inning after he retired the first two hitters in the frame. The junior walked three consecutive hitters to load the bases for Osis, who delivered a two-run single. Another walk reloaded the bases, the Hatters brought in freshman left hander
Chris Gonzalez to face Fassnacht. After working to a full count, the GW shortstop ripped a ball to deep center that Stetson's
Jacob Koos was unable to come up with cleanly. Three runs scored on the play for a 7-0 Colonials lead.
Â
Robbie Metz followed with an RBI single to make it 8-0.
Â
The Colonials added one more run in the seventh inning off junior
Vlad Nunez. Metz opened the frame with a single, moved up to second when Matt Cosentino was hit by a pitch and then moved up again on a wild pitch. He came in to score on a Pasteur single.
Â
Besides Meola's hit in the sixth, the only other hit in the game for Stetson came from freshman catcher
Danny Martin in the eighth inning.
Â
Osis and Metz had three hits each to lead the GW attack, which piled up 12 hits in the game. Fassnacht, who struck out four times in the series opener on Friday, bounced back with two hits and drove in five runs.
