Hatters' Season Ends in ASUN Tournament

Three Hatters scored in double figures but Lipscomb used a strong second half to secure an 89-73 win over Stetson in the ASUN Conference Tournament quarterfinals, Monday at Allen Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

No. 2 seed Lipscomb (21-9) moves onto the semifinals where they will face No. 3 seed Jacksonville on Thursday. Seventh-seeded Stetson ends its season at 12-20.

The Hatters fell into an early hole and trailed 32-16 with 7:41 left in the first half, but Stetson mounted a furious rally and trailed just 44-43 at halftime. Angel Rivera and Abayomi Iyiola combined to score 15 of Stetson's final 27 points in the half as the Hatters got back in the game.

But Lipscomb came out of the locker room with a 10-0 run to start the second half, taking a 54-43 lead on a Rob Marberry layup with 16:59 to play.

Stetson immediately cut the lead to eight when a 3-pointer by Divine Myles made it 54-46 with 14:52 to go, but the Bisons responded to that basket with consecutive layups by Kenny Cooper as Lipscomb went up 58-46.

Stetson never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

The Hatters out-rebounded the Bisons, 39-20, but were uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball and Lipscomb made them pay.

Stetson entered the game averaging less than 11 turnovers per game but committed 18 on Monday, including 12 in the first half. Lipscomb converted the turnovers into 26 points and owned a plus-15 points-off-turnovers advantage for the game.

Iyiola led Stetson with 18 points while also grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Divine Myles scored 15 points and B.J. Glasford added 14 as they played their final collegiate game.

ASUN leading scorer Garrison Matthews scored a game-high 29 points for Lipscomb, while Matt Rose scored 15 off the bench.

News & Notes
  • Senior Luke Doyle sank a 3-pointer with 5:45 left in the game to pass Aaron Graham (2010-14) to become Stetson's all-time leader in threes with 207. Doyle did it in three seasons while Graham played four in five years.
  • Divine Myles finished his career with a school-record 1,845 points
  • Myles also recorded 4 assists against the Bisons, giving him 501 for his career. In doing so, he becomes the only player in ASUN history with at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 150 steals.
  • Abayomi Iyiola recorded his fourth double-double of the season
