Myles' Big Effort Not Enough Against Spartans

Divine Myles turned in one of his best all-round performances of the year but Stetson couldn't overcome a 14-point halftime deficit as the Hatters suffered a 91-79 loss to USC Upstate in ASUN Conference play, Thursday in Spartanburg, S.C.

Myles finished with 26 points on 11 of 16 shooting and added 7 rebounds and 7 assists. But his heroics weren't enough to help the Hatters (10-17, 2-8) avoid their eighth straight loss.

Upstate (7-20, 2-8) used a 15-0 run late in the first half to break open a tight game.

With the Spartans leading, 30-27, Abayomi Iyiola tipped in his own missed shot to make it 30-29 with 6:26 to go before halftime. Upstate responded by scoring 15 straight point over the next 3:03 to lead 45-29 with 2:31 left in the half. Upstate led 47-33 at halftime.

Myles almost single-handedly brought the Hatters back in the second half.

With Stetson trailing, 54-39, Myles ripped off 12 straight points to get the Hatters within 59-51 with 12:28 to go.

The Hatters continued to chip away at the deficit, closing to within 65-64 on a Keith Matthews Layup with 7:08 to go.

Stetson took its only lead of the half on its next possession as Myles turned the corner for a layup to make it 66-65 Stetson, with 6:46 to go.

The Spartans, however, answered back with an 8-1 spurt and grabbed a 73-67 lead on a Malik Moore 3-pointer with 5:03 left. The lead grew to double figures again as Moore converted a layup for an 81-71 advantage with 2:48 to go. Stetson never got any closer the rest of the way.

Both teams shot 48.5 percent from the field, but the Spartans were 10 of 30 from 3-point range compared to 6 of 26 for Stetson. Iyiola was the only other Hatter to score in double figures with 10 points.

Moore scored 27 points for Upstate and teammate Deion Holmes scored a game-high 34 points.

The Hatters visit NJIT, 4 p.m., Saturday.

Quoting Coach Williams
"It's been the same message the whole year. At some point the good practices have to transfer to the game. You can't spot your opponent 14 points at halftime. We ran the exact same stuff in the second half and somehow we were able to score. We had more energy. In the first half we didn't have that. I'm disappointed in the first half. Our second half was fine but the damage was already done."

News & Notes
  • Myles enjoyed his 25th double-figure scoring night of the season, and the 25th 20-point game of his career.
  • The 26 points gives Myles 1,773 career points, leaving him 54 shy of becoming the Hatters' all-time leading scorer
  • Stetson out-rebounded the Spartans, 41-33
